Harbingers of Halloween are posting up along the streets of Bow.

The town’s Parks and Recreation Department opened its first Scarecrows of Bow fundraiser this year, selling plain burlap bags to residents and town departments so they can get creative and make their own personalized scarecrows.

Parks and Rec Director Cindy Rose said the bags sold out last week. The bags cost $5 apiece and raised about $700 for the Recreation Revolving Fund, with the hope that it will be a fundraiser towards the community building, Rose said.

“We just wanted a fun event for the town to do,” Rose wrote in an email. “It’s been so nice to see the residents, town departments, schools, town organizations, clubs and businesses join in.”

Program Coordinator Anne-Marie Guertin introduced the idea to Bow after seeing the same event carried out in Hampstead.

The scarecrows can be seen in more than 60 locations around town.
