Dear N.H. Secretary of State: A diverse collection of current and historic leaders voluntarily stepped down upon realizing what was best for their countrymen – Lucius Cincinnatus, statesman (knew he achieved his specific task of saving Rome); George Washington, president (knew a smooth transfer of power was imperative); Lyndon Johnson, president (knew the country had to move past Vietnam); Richard Nixon, president (knew the country had to move past Watergate); Nikki Haley, U.N. ambassador (knew what her energy level was).
All of these adherents to the Society of the Cincinnati, for better or for worse, recognized when to say when. After 42 years of exemplary service, Mr. Secretary, please honor New Hampshire citizens by emulating the enlightened principle granted to us by Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus. When leaders like George Washington realize their time is up, without having to be told, that’s even more American than voting itself.
