“United We Stand” – I’ve written about it before as a possible Democratic Party slogan, and it’s time again.

The immigration problem on the southwest border is not with the incomers, no matter how they arrive. The problem is the separation policy our government chooses to enforce. The detention centers’ warehouses of chain-link cages are appalling. The barely documented process of pulling families apart is even more appalling, especially since its goal is to make life miserable enough for immigrants that they will want to return home.

As the United States, we ought to be displaying unity. How about more money for judges, lawyers, the immigration services? Isn’t the real principle behind our nation’s democracy a true and welcoming sense of freedom? How can we be free and welcoming if we pull apart family units? These are real people, with hearts and minds and an overwhelming urge to find acceptance and safety.

If we stand united, we will continue to push for an administration that recognizes the value of every human being. We must push for the sanctity of family. And we must vote in 2020 for change at the top.
