It usually occurs at a beach – the line is marked in the sand because it’s easy to draw. A challenge is given: “I dare you to cross it!” If crossed, there was usually a sand fight or a dunk in the water. Then “beach-time” would simply go on. A line was crossed the other day in a comic. A comic world was ended, but this morning, reading the Sunday comic pages, I see that “beach time” goes on. Stuff like that happens. Now, if only there would be a way to have a brief sand fight or a dunk in the water to bring a close to our nation’s stomping on the lines in the sand of political norms and find a return to common decency in our political dialogue. Be still – breathe – we can do it. Try.
