The governor’s proposed reduction in the budget for N.H. Legal Assistance by 50 percent is not acceptable. Nor is it acceptable that he pit N.H. Legal Assistance against other program budgets for those citizens in greatest need. He claims that he proposed a budget to protect the most vulnerable of our citizens. Clearly the governor has failed. Individuals who face legal issues such as eviction, domestic abuse, debt collection, etc., are unable to work productively when they do not have good legal representation, to say nothing about upheaval in their personal lives. I suggest that the governor speak to Gordon MacDonald, his attorney general, who chaired or was on the board of the Campaign for Legal Services for many years. He can clearly provide the governor with the details of the work of N.H. Legal Assistance and its need for full funding of its budget. The full budget amount to N.H. Legal Assistance should be restored.
