I appreciate the column written by Glenn Currie (Monitor Forum, March 28), including the statement “I don’t disagree with most of what Katy Burns wrote in her opinion piece March 24.” He also said, in so many words, that Democrats are using the horrific Donald Trump comments for political purposes.
Trump said John McCain is not a war hero: “I like people who weren’t captured.” I am glad you do not defend his statement. Some Republicans allude to disliking it but will not come out and condemn it.
When I first heard Trump’s comments, I was stunned. I believe most Americans, regardless of party, were stunned.
The late Sen. McCain does not hear Trump’s words. His family and friends do. All is legitimate criticism of Trump, whether it be moral, ethical and, yes, even political.
I disagreed with McCain on some issues, worst of which was when he flipped to wanting “the wall,” which I personally think was to consolidate ultra-right voters with normal Republicans. But I never once looked at McCain without total respect for his service to his country. As a matter of fact, every time I saw the man, my memory instantly recalled the pictures of him as a prisoner of war. For five years!
I believe the vast majority of Americans see Trump’s comments as callous and heartless, you being among them. Thank you.
