The developer of the Abbott Village condos in Concord will not be asking to tear down the historic Abbott House this month.

Assistant city planner Beth Fenstermacher said developer Jason Garland put off his request to demolish the 382 N. State St., structure because he needed more time to get a structural engineer to inspect the building.

The home, built in 1760, was supposed to be restored by the original Abbott Village developer as part of the agreement with the cityโ€™s planning board in the mid-2000s. When the development changed hands, the condition that the house be restored prior to certain milestones went with it.

But since then, neither developer has taken steps to fix the building, and it has fallen into extreme disrepair. Garland plans to ask the planning board for permission to tear the building down, saying it is unsalvageable.

The planning board allowed Garland to start Phase 5 of Abbott Village last month. They kept the original conditions that certificates of occupancy for the new condos wonโ€™t be granted until the Abbott House is restored.

Fenstermacher said they will know next week if Garland will appear at the May planning board meeting.
