Two motorists were sent to Concord Hospital with serious injuries after a head-on collision caused one vehicle to catch fire.

Two vehicles collided about 10:02 a.m. near the Airport Road and Manchester Street intersection. Police say one vehicle, a red 2019 Kia Soul, caught fire as a result of the crash. The second vehicle, a Black Nissan Rouge, sustained excessive damage from the crash. A third vehicle, a white SUV, was struck as well but sustained minor damage.

Concord police Lt. Sean Ford said he was unsure why the car caught fire, saying it will take weeks for the city’s accident reconstruction team to sort the incident out. He did not release the names of the drivers.

Manchester Street beyond the Airport Road intersection, where a Nissan dealership is located was closed for several hours after the crash. Vehicles approaching from the Pembroke region were being turned around, and Concord traffic was diverted down Airport Road.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
