Last week’s news brought a story about the graduation address at Morehouse College, after which the entire graduating class was freed from student loan debt. Though certainly admirable and exciting for those graduates of Morehouse, I am saddened that a private enterprise is bailing out in this case a college, which should be addressing a basic funding problem.
It reminded me of how the city of Concord did not address the problem of funding homeless housing because a local church offered to take care of the problem for them for 10 years. Eventually, that funding crippled the church’s ability to carry out other mission work and left Concord in need of a different strategy. Colleges and social agencies should not be hoping for someone else to bail them out of providing what should be central to their existence.
Wealthy people and nonprofits cannot do the work of what our democracy should be addressing. A republic looks out for its people.
