That Gov. Chris Sununu would veto paid family leave is terrible but that he would celebrate doing so on national television is the most embarrassing thing I have seen since he took office.
Senate Bill 1 is modern policy with a proven ability to lessen hardship on both workers and employers by providing a measure of financial stability during the kind of major life events that every single working person experiences in their lifetime. It’s the kind of policy that has the power to improve both individual lives and society as a whole.
While Gov. Sununu celebrates his veto of a paid leave bill with substance, he continues to pay only lip service to making paid leave in New Hampshire a reality, insisting on his own plan that has been roundly panned by policy experts.
Sununu had a chance to make good on his campaign promise for paid family and medical leave in a responsible way, and he did not take it. His plan will not work and he knows it. The governor needs to make paid leave happen for New Hampshire families.
