The Monitor’s recent articles on the recycling of waste, emphaşized by the self-appointed Granite Geek’s published telephonic interview with the manager of the Barnstead-Chichester-Epsom-Pittsfield (BCEP) solid waste facility on Laconia Road in Pittsfield needs a few comments and facts (an in-depth visit by the Granite Geek would be revealing).
The BCEP is a joint-town organization formed several years ago. Annual operations are summarized in annual town reports and discussed at town meetings and monthly on-site business meetings that are open to the public.
The BCEP determines in an ongoing manner the best available recycling options. For example, over the last six years, nine tons of aluminum cans have been recycled, resulting in an income of over $140,000. In 2018 alone, 22 tons of aluminum cans were sold for $29,884, which defrays site-operating expenses and lowers property taxes for the five participating towns – a win-win operation.
