Those of us who have been advocating to repeal the death penalty for decades are thrilled, relieved and grateful that New Hampshire will no longer have the option to kill people.
Thank you to the representatives who voted to override the governor’s veto and especially to Renny Cushing for not giving up. The lack of bravery has become a national theme but not here at this momentous time.
When I read that former N.H. attorney general and U.S. senator Kelly Ayotte was angered by the repeal, I wondered if she’d better understand had she listened to the day of testimony after she stated her opinion to the committee and immediately left. If she’d heard victims’ families, wrongly incarcerated former inmates, and citizens and legislators who movingly talked about why they’d changed their minds ask (beg) for repeal, she too might have reconsidered.
Her profession requires that she be a good listener. Citizens and legislators have spoken.
