I recall a well-written essay on the Forum page on April 28. It was about “God and the American Constitution” and included a provocative statement: “Nowhere in our Constitution does the word God or a reference to God appear.” Interesting observation.
Actually, it was not necessary. The Constitution, in its philosophy, is based on the Declaration of Independence, which preceded it. That document, so vital and precious, contains five references to the one who is “Nature’s God,” “Creator,” “Divine Providence,” and the “Supreme Judge of the world.” Why is the Constitution based upon a separation of powers? Because the Founding Fathers recognized that man is a sinner. Unchecked centralized power (as with a king or dictator) is always tending to tyranny.
George Washing said it best: “Government is like fire, a dangerous servant and a fearful master.”
