In the column about Harriet Tubman’s face on the $20 bill (Sunday Monitor Forum, June 16), the writer states that Andrew Jackson gained fame by “defeating the British in 1815 in the Battle of New Orleans, ensuring that the United States would maintain control of land it acquired in the Louisiana Purchase.”

Actually, this is not true. The British had given up before the battle. The word had just not arrived by boat from England before the battle.
