In response to Joseph Mendola’s column (Monitor Opinion, June 22) in which he rants about socialism in America and provides incorrect information throughout: I understand it is an opinion piece, but facts are facts and the truth is to be discerned from the facts.
The truth is that the president professes his love for brutal communist dictators in North Korea, Russia and the president of China, finding them to be good, great, nice, you name it. That should be of great concern to Americans. Imagine Dwight Eisenhower saying similar things. Outrage comes to mind.
Is it suddenly okay to love communists while attacking what the president calls “socialists”? Communists are to the left of socialists on the political spectrum. Communists survive only as dictatorships.
Our government is democratic. No one has unchecked power. No one is above the law. Holding our government to account is the job of Congress and the news media. Our state and federal governments are built on fair representation because we all know that a system of voter suppression, gerrymandering and money-dominated politics, where the views of the minority can dominate the majority, is anti-democratic.
Our government’s job is to keep the people safe. Our government must ensure a decent life for all Americans and ensure that we have a future.
Mendola and the president talk about “socialism” for re-election purposes by labeling all Democrats as “socialists” and then defining socialism as anti-American. Don’t let them fool you. Speak up about what you want government to accomplish. Vote.
