In a recent “My Turn” article (Monitor Opinion, July 22) the writer calls socialism a bogeyman created by Republicans. A bogeyman is an imaginary character made up to scare people. Socialism is not imaginary. It is as real as the nose on our faces. Whether you call yourself a Bernie Sanders socialist, a democratic socialist, a progressive or a communist, all of those political economies have one policy in common. That is the government is a better allocator of our resources than the free enterprise system.
That was the message sent by the Democratic candidates in the two recent debates. But the one thing they will not do is to give us the arithmetic that tells us how much their free benefits will cost and how much taxes they can raise each year to pay for all of those freebies. They will not tell us because it will cost the American taxpayer much more than can be collected.
The article said 13.2% of New Hampshire citizens are without health insurance, so the writer concluded we need national health insurance. Well the percentage is really 8%. But the writer should understand that the Obama administration expanded Medicaid to cover everyone with incomes up to $38,000 per year. And Obamacare takes care of the rest. So, if Obamacare is so great, why is anyone uninsured? Either they choose not to have coverage or they do not know that Obamacare is available to them.
