Manchester Invitational XC
The Bow girls’ cross country team won the freshman race at the Manchester Invitational at Derryfield Park, placing five runners in the top 27. Maya Brochu (sixth), Delia Brochu (12th), Emily Kiah (24th), Susanna Zahn (25th), Hannah Rondeau (27th), Norah Garland (84th) and Grace Neff (92nd) formed the winning squad. The Falcons (60 points), topped strong programs from Coe-Brown (64), Pinkerton (66) and Bedford (99).
“Although these freshmen are contributing members of our varsity duty team, I wanted to showcase them against some of the best freshmen statewide,” Bow coach Barb Higgins said.
Natalie Sicard (third), Rowan Carr (10th) and Carly Hardy (14th) led Coe-Brown, while Gracie McHugh (20th) was the top runner for Concord, which did not have enough runners to score as a team.
■Shaun Fifield (28th) was the top runner for Concord in the boys’ freshman race, placing well in a field of 220 runners. Maxwell Scharr (31st), Matthew Hooper (32nd), Boden Rand (47th) and Jacob Gurtner (69th) were the other scoring runners for Concord (fifth place as a team). Caleb Medina (34th), Matthew Corriveau (36th) and Zachary Bistany (40th) led Coe-Brown to seventh place.
■Concord’s Katy McCoy finished second and Quincy Bolduc finished fifth out of more than 200 runners, leading Concord to eighth-place in the girls’ JV race. Coe-Brown’s Cadence Howard (24th) and Olivia Buzzell (40th), and Hopkinton’s Maxine Asmussen (31st) also ran well.
■Lars Hogne (fourth), Isaac Wells (eighth) and Tyler Tkaczyk (15th) led Coe-Brown to second place out of 47 teams in the JV race. Tyler Rose (18th) and Shane Cameron (46th) also ran well for Coe-Brown. Concord finished ninth and was led by Liam Conery (16th), Rovanee Nickson (22nd) and Matt Lavoie (44th).
The Concord JV girls’ soccer beat Keene, 5-3. Caroline Quirk and Emma Stephenson each scored two goals, Sarah Potter scored one goal and Gabby Chown had four assists.
■The Hopkinton JV boys’ soccer team defeated Laconia, 3-0. The Hawks dominated the game, allowing only two shots. Jonah Klingler scored the first goal off a Ryan Graham corner, Jonah Quinn scored off a through ball and Graham completed the scoring with a goal from 22 yards out.
The Rundlett Middle School boys’ ‘A’ soccer team lost to Keene, 3-0. Killian Grant, Gabriel Zinkin, and Tyler Watts had solid games for Rundlett. Matt Jenness and Theodore Schneible shared the duties in net.
■The Merrimack Valley field hockey team tied the Rundlett ‘A’ team, 1-1. Alyssa Brodeur scored for MV off a feed from Julianne Guertin. Taylor Gionet played solid defense and Kaiya Mercier was strong at midfield.
The Tilton School boys’ soccer team tied Dexter, 1-1.
■The Tilton football team lost to Wilbraham & Monson, 24-18.
■The New Hampton School football team defeated Berkshire, 27-8.
■The St. Paul’s boys’ cross country team captured five of the top 10 places to beat Belmont Hill, 18-41, and St. Mark’s, 24-32. Clemens Herfarth led the race, finishing in 16:57. Alex Taylor finished second for St. Paul’s in 17:34, while Charlie Anderson (sixth), Finn Sias (seventh) and Luke Dieterle (10th) rounding out the scoring.
■The St. Paul’s girls’ varsity cross country team narrowly beat St. Mark’s, 27-30. Caroline Light (22:05) won the race and Georgia Alessio (22:56) finished second. Ariane Bretl (23:41) finished third.
■The St. Paul’s JV girls’ cross country team lost to St. Mark’s, 19-40. The top three finishers for the JV squad were Ashley Davidson (26:12), Anna Smith-Moser (26:22) and Izzy Parisien (26:52).
Hillsboro’s Paytne Walker scored on a penalty kick in the 61st minute to help lead the New England College women’s soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Mitchell College.
New Hampshire Comets softball annual meeting will be on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Northeast Delta Dental, Two Delta Drive, Concord. At the meeting new board members will be considered for the 2019-20 season. The positions of public relations/fundraising and event coordinator will be voted on. New Hampshire Tackles Hunger, organized by the New Hampshire Food Bank and WMUR-TV sportscaster Jamie Staton, are once again teaming up to help fight hunger during the high school football season. Fans are asked to bring canned food to specific games this fall as part of the state-wide food drive. On Saturday, Concord High will hold its food drive during the home game against Goffstown, and on that same day Bishop Brady will also be hosting its food drive during its game against Franklin. The Hillsboro-Deering-Hopkinton drive will be during its Oct. 5 home game against Lebanon. Pembroke Academy will also hold its drive on Oct. 5 for the game against Bow. John Stark rounds out the local drives on Oct. 11 for its game in Weare against Pembroke.
Merrimack Valley High School Athletics Hall of Fame will be inducting its second class on Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The inductees include Kevin O’Brien, Dave Huckins and the 1989 Merrimack Valley boys’ basketball team. The public is welcome to attend.
Merrimack Valley High School Athletics Hall of Fame golf tournament will be held on Oct. 12 at Loudon Country Club. The cost is $400 per foursome, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, post-tournament meal and pre-tournament coffee and muffins.
New Hampshire Legends of Hockey 17th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Luncheon will be on Oct. 20 at the Grappone Conference Center, in Concord at 11:30 a.m. This year’s Hall of Fame inductees include Denis Martin, Freddy Meyer and Deron Quint who are being inducted as players; longtime New England College bench boss Tom Carroll is being inducted as a coach; Rod Ross is being inducted in the media category; and the late Downing Potter “DP” Brown is being inducted posthumously as a builder. Ben Smith will be the keynote speaker. The hockey history of the Alpine Club, which competed in the Granite State Hockey League in the early to mid 60s will also be recognized. Co-ed Field Hockey Skills clinics are being offered at FieldHouse Sports in Bow. Beginners are encouraged. Next session begins Oct. 17 for grades 3-6. Soccer Skills and Goalkeeper clinics at FieldHouse Sports Indoor Facility in Bow are now open for registration. The six-week clinics are directed by Jorge Pardo of Caramba Soccer Camps and begin Nov. 4. Clinics are for all abilities, ages 6-60 and meet Monday afternoons. CHaD Battle of the Badges Hockey Championship tryouts will be held on Friday and Oct. 5 at Sullivan Arena on St. Anselm’s College campus. The game will be held on March 13, 2020 at SNHU Arena in Manchester between police officers and firefighters from across the region to raise money for Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD). Fire tryouts will be from 4-5 p.m. on Sept. 21, 7:45-8:45 p.m. on Sept. 27 and 2-3 p.m. on Oct. 5. Police tryouts at 5:15-6:15 p.m. on Saturday, 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Sept. 27 and 3:15-4:15 p.m. on Oct. 5. Tune-up Basketball League in Meredith is open for registrations for boys and girls in grades 6-10. The league is open to players from area towns and space is limited.
