Sara Sankowich, in her role as manager of forestry operations and sustainability for Unitil, must have passed courses in Republicanesque spin with flying colors (Monitor Opinion, Sept. 25)
Ms. Sankowich, I’m one of the letter writers who reacted strongly to the notice that Unitil would be using glyphosate – a known carcinogen and pollinator destroyer, which you so politely ignore – along waterways and in forests.
At 76, I’m one of the “question authority” generation; we were taught to think critically and not swallow whole what someone in a white lab coat with a clipboard and PowerPoint presentation says, no matter what “industry-leading organization to positively impact right-of way management” you represent. You say, “Small droplets (of the carcinogenic poison) are placed on the leaf only.” Pray, Ms. Sankowich, do you employ a team of fairies with tiny brushes to do this? I’m thinking not. I’m thinking aerosolization, which disperses the poison widely even on a windless day. Imagine how far it travels when it’s windy.
No, this is anything but a thoughtful approach to vegetation management. It’s one more assault on the environment all tarted up in verbiage reeking of stuff that cows plop.
