The John Stark High School bass fishing team finished third overall at the NHIAA state final, which took place Saturday on Spofford Lake. Dusty Hallee, Dominik Sutkus, Bowdyn Egner and Chris Roy helped the Generals register a total weight of 9.52 pounds. Kearsarge, the defending champions, went back-to-back after catching eight fish for a total weight of 15.55 pounds. Coe-Brown placed 11th.
Nick Reynolds scored the lone goal for the Rundlett Middle School boysโ A soccer team in a 1-1 tie against Bedford. Rundlett held on to its lead until Bedford evened the score on a penalty late in the first half. Tyler Watt, Tanner Parizo, Gabe Zinken and Allan Yapp helped lead the defense, while Matt Jenness made several critical saves.
โ The Merrimack Valley Middle School field hockey team fell to Hampstead, 4-2. Alyssa Brodeur and Jules Guertin both scored, while Kayla Cole and Kaiya Mercier registered one assist apiece. Caroline Wheeler worked hard in the midfield.
โ Over 260 athletes competed at the Hopkinton Middle School Cross Country meet on Tuesday and Annie Daniels and Amelia Walsh had outstanding races for the host Hawks as the girlsโ team finished second out of eight teams. The Hopkinton boysโ team finished a strong third place with Jonas Singer and Teddy Ehrmanntraut racing well over the 3K course.
The Hopkinton JV boysโ soccer team defeated Prospect Mountain, 3-1. The Hawks started off slow as the two sides went into halftime tied at 1, but Hopkinton came roaring back in the second half, scoring two quick goals early on to hold off Prospect Mountain. Rory Campbell, Andrew Zankel and Quinn Whitehead all scored for Hopkinton, while Ethan Molnar, Sam Brown and Ryan Graham collected one assist apiece.
Jean Johnston and Mary Jane Cormier finished first on the gross side during the Pembroke Pines Fall Ladiesโ Member/Guest Tournament. Kasey Bemis and Angela Case were the net winners. There were also several other league winners, including Jim and Julie Cragg (Couplesโ League), Connie Manus and Sylvia Prive (Ladiesโ League), and Rick and Kelvin Fosher (Menโs League).
University of New Hampshire freshman forward Ava Mariani has been named the America East Rookie of the Week after setting the tone for the field hockey team. In a 4-0 win over Bryant University, Mariani scored a goal on her only shot of the game. In nine games this season (four starts), Mariani has two goals โ both game-winners.
Kayla Paquin (Pembroke) dished an assist to teammate Molly Bieksha to lead the New England College womenโs soccer team past the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 2-0.
New Hampshire Tackles Hunger, organized by the New Hampshire Food Bank and WMUR-TV sportscaster Jamie Staton, are once again teaming up to help fight hunger during the high school football season. Fans are asked to bring canned food to specific games this fall as part of the state-wide food drive. The Hillsboro-Deering-Hopkinton drive will be during Saturdayโs home game against Lebanon. Pembroke Academy will also hold its drive on Saturday for the game against Bow. John Stark rounds out the local drives on Oct. 11 for its game in Weare against Pembroke.
Merrimack Valley High School Athletics Hall of Fame will be inducting its second class on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The inductees include Kevin OโBrien, Dave Huckins and the 1989 Merrimack Valley boysโ basketball team. The public is welcome to attend.
Merrimack Valley High School Athletics Hall of Fame golf tournament will be held on Oct. 12 at Loudon Country Club. The cost is $400 per foursome, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, post-tournament meal and pre-tournament coffee and muffins.
New Hampshire Basketball Coaches Organization will induct six former basketball coaches into their first Hall of Fame class on Oct. 13 at The Red Blazer in Concord. Social hour will start at 1:30 p.m., followed by a buffet luncheon. The first class selected by the NHBCO includes: John Fagula (Nashua), Jack Ford (Winnacunnet), Gary Jenness (Groveton and White Mountains), Mike Lee (Farmington), Lang Metcalf (Lebanon) and Danny Parr (Portsmouth). New Hampshire Legends of Hockey 17th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Luncheon will be on Oct. 20 at the Grappone Conference Center, in Concord at 11:30 a.m. This yearโs Hall of Fame inductees include Denis Martin, Freddy Meyer and Deron Quint who are being inducted as players; longtime New England College bench boss Tom Carroll is being inducted as a coach; Rod Ross is being inducted in the media category; and the late Downing Potter โDPโ Brown is being inducted posthumously as a builder. Ben Smith will be the keynote speaker. The hockey history of the Alpine Club, which competed in the Granite State Hockey League in the early to mid 60s will also be recognized. 16th Annual NHTI Basketball Coaching Clinic will be held at the Goldie Crocker Wellness Center on the NHTI campus in Concord on Oct. 20. CHaD Battle of the Badges Hockey Championship tryouts will be held on Saturday at Sullivan Arena on St. Anselmโs College campus. The game will be held on March 13, 2020 at SNHU Arena in Manchester between police officers and firefighters from across the region to raise money for Childrenโs Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD).
