Quinn Whitehead collected the hat trick to lead the Hopkinton Middle School JV boys’ soccer team past Merrimack Valley, 4-1. Hopkinton created several scoring chances, and could have had more if two shots hadn’t hit the post and crossbar. Whitehead finished off his afternoon with a terrific goal from 25 yards out. Rory Campbell (goal, assist) and Andrew Zankel (assist) also played well.
■The Hillsboro-Deering JV girls’ soccer team defeated Belmont, 2-0, behind two goals from Emily Howell.
Both Ben Hughes and Jayce Scroggins scored two goals as the Rundlett Middle School boys’ A soccer team beat Woodbury, 7-0. Nick Reynolds, Jozwue Tungaru and Chris Arorcena all contributed with goals, while Gabriel Zinkin, Allan Yap, Tyler Watt and Tanner Parizo led a tough defense. Matt Jenness and Theodore Schneible shared the shutout in net.

A total of 70 alumni of the Hockey East Association are on rosters and gearing up for the start of the NHL season. It’s the eighth straight year that Hockey East has boasted the most skaters for opening night rosters. Hockey East alumni are featured on 28 of 31 NHL teams, and four are from UNH, including Trevor van Riemsdyk (on IR for Carolina), Warren Foegele (Carolina), Brett Pesce (Carolina) and James van Riemsdyk (Philadelphia).
■Sophomore forward Emily Rickwood tallied her first career goal for the UNH women’s hockey team in a 4-1 loss to St. Lawrence University Thursday in Durham. Tori Howran and Taylor Wenczkowski added assists for the Wildcats (1-1-0), who will take on St. Lawrence again on Friday afternoon.
CHaD Battle of the Badges Hockey Championship tryouts will be held on Saturday at Sullivan Arena on St. Anselm’s College campus. The game will be held on March 13, 2020 at SNHU Arena in Manchester between police officers and firefighters from across the region to raise money for Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD). Fire tryouts will be from 4-5 on Saturday. Police tryouts at 3:15-4:15 p.m. on Saturday. All interested skaters must register for tryouts and bring their own equipment, water, and necessary gear. Tune-up Basketball League in Meredith is open for registrations for boys and girls in grades 6-10. The league is open to players from area towns and space is limited. New Hampshire Tackles Hunger, organized by the New Hampshire Food Bank and WMUR-TV sportscaster Jamie Staton, are once again teaming up to help fight hunger during the high school football season. Fans are asked to bring canned food to specific games this fall as part of the state-wide food drive. The Hillsboro-Deering-Hopkinton drive will be during Saturday’s home game against Lebanon. Pembroke Academy will also hold its drive on Saturday for the game against Bow. John Stark rounds out the local drives on Oct. 11 for its game in Weare against Pembroke.
Merrimack Valley High School Athletics Hall of Fame will be inducting its second class on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The inductees include Kevin O’Brien, Dave Huckins and the 1989 Merrimack Valley boys’ basketball team. The public is welcome to attend.
Merrimack Valley High School Athletics Hall of Fame golf tournament will be held on Oct. 12 at Loudon Country Club. The cost is $400 per foursome, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, post-tournament meal and pre-tournament coffee and muffins.
New Hampshire Basketball Coaches Organization will induct six former basketball coaches into their first Hall of Fame class on Oct. 13 at The Red Blazer in Concord. Social hour will start at 1:30 p.m., followed by a buffet luncheon. New Hampshire Legends of Hockey 17th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Luncheon will be on Oct. 20 at the Grappone Conference Center, in Concord at 11:30 a.m. This year’s Hall of Fame inductees include Denis Martin, Freddy Meyer and Deron Quint who are being inducted as players; longtime New England College bench boss Tom Carroll is being inducted as a coach; Rod Ross is being inducted in the media category; and the late Downing Potter “DP” Brown is being inducted posthumously as a builder. Ben Smith will be the keynote speaker. The hockey history of the Alpine Club, which competed in the Granite State Hockey League in the early to mid 60s will also be recognized. 16th Annual NHTI Basketball Coaching Clinic will be held at the Goldie Crocker Wellness Center on the NHTI campus in Concord on Oct. 20. Registration is $45 if registered by Tuesday, or $60 after that day. Coaching staff of three from the same school/program for $100 on or before Tuesday or for $110 after. Clinic topics include (are subject to change) defense to offense transition, developing offense, post play development, developing defensive core, rules interpretation, defending the pick and roll, and quick hitters.
