Jerry Tepe (Monitor letters, Sept. 25) expressed concern regarding the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump by the U.S. House of Representatives. I shared his concerns until I read this statement from the whistleblower’s report: “I have received information from multiple U.S. government officials that the president of the United States is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election.”
We can’t let our “concerns” make us fearful. There is only one remedy for protecting our country from a lawless presidency. An impeachment inquiry by the U.S. House of Representatives is the sole tool. If the above quote is not enough, tack on the fact that Trump’s conversation with the Ukranian president was moved to a server that holds only our country’s highest secrets. This particular server stands alone. It is not even connected to White House staff members.
Maybe Trump is impeached or maybe not. Maybe the U.S. Senate will remove him from office, maybe not. Maybe Trump would otherwise lose the 2020 election, maybe not. Maybe we have a country ruled by law, maybe we do not. If not, I will be adding an extra line to my mailing address: Banana Republic of America.
