Matt Burroughs secured himself his third NHGA major title and his first New Hampshire Mid-Amateur title Thursday by firing a 2-under-par 208 over the 54-hole tournament at Concord Country Club. The golfer out of Derryfield CC won by a five-stroke margin, defeating some of the top players in the state.
The last time Burroughs won a NHGA major title was back in 2006 when he won both the Players Invitational and the New Hampshire Amateur Championship.
“It feels fantastic,” Burroughs said. “That’s why I made the changes that I did to be able to play these tournaments.”
Throughout the final round, there were a number of players trying to chase down Burroughs. Brett Wilson and two Concord CC members, Fletcher Sokul and Will McLaughlin all finished tied for second at 3-over.
Jim Cilley (Pembroke Pines CC), who was one of the two leaders following each of the first two rounds, fell down the leaderboard a little in the final round, shooting 5-over-par 75 in the final round to finish tied for fifth with Jamie Ferullo (Rochester CC).
