We New Hampshire residents differ in our views on gun control, but as we discuss the issue, we should stick to the facts.

In a letter of Oct. 1, a reader claimed the Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke advocates outright gun confiscation. That is false, except in the narrow case of AR-15/AK-47 style rifles.

After his hometown of El Paso suffered a terrorist attack by a man using such a rifle, one that left 22 people dead, O’Rourke apparently had had enough. These rifles are not designed for home defense or hunting, but rather to kill many people quickly. They are effective in that role – this style of rifle allowed Adam Lanza to kill 20 first-graders and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Yes, 20 first-grade students. It is time to limit these guns to police and soldiers.

O’Rourke’s proposal to address this issue stands in stark contrast to that of our president, which is, well, nothing.
