I lost track of the exact number a long time ago, but at least two-dozen Democratic presidential candidates have visited New Hampshire during the run-up to the 2020 first-in-the-nation primary. We have many excellent candidates to choose from, but I believe that Beto O’Rourke is the best of them all.

I am speaking merely as one voter. In my capacity as a state representative and member of the Durham town committee, I will be fully supportive of all the candidates.

I admit to being a little prejudiced in Beto’s favor because we both went to Columbia. Our school has a good presidential track record: Obama and Eisenhower went there, and the greatest president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, went to Columbia Law School.

However, for me, as a Democrat and an American, the number one issue in the presidential race is defeating the incumbent. Beto has shown that he is the best positioned to defeat him and repair the damage he has done.

Beto is bold and unfiltered, but never arrogant or boastful. And most importantly, he is extraordinarily gracious: He makes a point of greeting each and every person in the room on their level.

On gun violence and the drug war, Beto has rolled out bold and comprehensive plans that go further than any other candidate. From banning assault weapons to ending the failed war on drugs, he shows that he will bring the same knowledge and passion to the other critical issues facing our nation.
