The Concord School Board runs on a separate budget, except for a few overlaps. They have been autonomous for years, allowing them to sweep much under the rug and spend the taxpayers’ money like water. They get an A-plus for spin. Nothing new here – it’s been going on for years.

Many Concord citizens do not realize the board is autonomous, with a budget outspending the city council by far, thus costing taxpayers huge money. Check out their administrative costs. Also, per the city charter, I don’t believe one entity can interfere with the other. This board needs to go under the city council, making them more accountable and transparent.

The last time this was put to the voters, all sorts of political “jury rigging” went on to sway voters against the move. Maybe now might be the time to revisit this once again. The questions that need to be asked: Are the children really getting a top education in this city, and are they safe from sexual predators?
