A Merrimack County grand jury has indicted a Concord man accused of driving impaired in a rollover crash that seriously injured a passenger and himself.
Steven Maxfield, 24, is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated in connection with the single-vehicle crash on June 12 at the intersection of Hazen Drive and East Side Drive. He is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time.
Police responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash with entrapment at about 6 p.m. Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate both Maxfield and a passenger, Amelia Anjim of Concord.
According to indictments, Anjim suffered a fractured left humerus, an ACL tear and a concussion. Additionally, police say Maxfield suffered critical injuries. Both were taken by ambulance to Concord Hospital.
The next day, police arrested Maxfield at the hospital where he was still receiving treatment.
Several witnesses told police they saw a white Chrysler traveling south on East Side Drive at โa very high rate of speedโ just prior to the crash. The vehicle rolled over several times, striking a traffic control sign, a fence and a utility pole.
Concord police Lt. Sean Ford said alcohol and speed played a role in causing the crash.
