After spending the last three seasons as the head coach of the Concord High School boys’ basketball team, Dave Chase announced Tuesday that he will not be returning for a fourth.

“At this time I want to explore other opportunities where my talents and coaching decisions might be better appreciated by all stakeholders,” Chase wrote in his resignation letter to Concord Athletic Director Steve Mello.

Chase took over the team in May 2016 and was tasked with building back up a program that had struggled to a 13-60 record under John Finnegan (2013-2016).

Chase came in with a strong resume having coached basketball for nearly 20 years at Hopkinton High where he won 109 games with the girls’ team and 193 with the boys. He still maintains several positions with the Hawks, serving as head coach for the baseball and golf teams, which have both won championships in recent years.

During his time at Concord, the Tide improved every year. Chase went 4-14 in his first season, 6-12 the following year and guided Concord to the playoffs last winter with an 11-7 record.

“Recently, I have come to realize that while I have, for the most part, enjoyed coaching and the student athletes, there are certain aspects of my time at Concord that have proven both detrimental to my enthusiasm for helping young people reach their potential and hostile beyond the expectations of a coach.”

Chase then added: “I have, however, nothing but great things to say about the Concord Athletic Department and I look forward to seeing the boys’ basketball program’s continued success.”
