The question on some clear-thinking folks’ minds these days is, “Who will be Trump’s Joseph Welch”? That is the Army representative who finally broke the spell of anti-Communist hysteria run amok during the 1950s McCarthy era by asking Sen. Joseph McCarthy, “Have you no decency, sir”?
We may have seen that person last month during the Trump impeachment in the form of Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council. Lt. Col. Vindman monitored Trump’s call with the Ukrainian president during which Trump sought dirt on Joe Biden, his political rival. Also during the phone call, military aid was mentioned and only a brainwashed tool would not see the connection as a quid pro quo.
Lt. Col. Vindman, a decorated war hero, felt the call was a threat to America’s national security and reported it to his superiors. This is damning testimony that all Americans should be aware of, regardless of political affiliation.
After speaking the truth, instead of concerning themselves with the facts, Trump Moonies have attempted to shoot the messenger. They’ve even gone so far as to accuse a truly honorable member of America’s armed forces of being an unpatriotic immigrant.
So I ask, not of Trump and his cult of personality, but of the rest of the American people, “Have you no decency to see the truth and what it means for our country’s future?”
