Senior Katie Meserve had 12 points and 10 rebounds, junior Maurgan McGrath added 110 points and the Hopkinton girls’ basketball team rolled to a 60-23 season-opening win at home on Friday night against Newport.

“We split playing time, the starters only played about half the game, so everybody got a good run and we had 11 people score,” Hopkinton coach Pat Roye said. “It was just a nice way to get started.”

Kally Murdough and Hailey Pecce each finished with eight points for the Hawks (1-0), while Fiona Beane orchestrated the offense with six assists.

Hopkinton senior Ellie Owen led a defensive effort that limited the Tigers (0-1) to just 12 points in the first half. The Hawks went on a 17-2 run to start the game and led 41-12 at the break.

“I was pleased with the defense, the kids did a nice job,” Roye said. “It was a game that was plagued by a lot of fouls. We cleaned that up in the second half , but we’ve still got some work to do there. We’ve got to stop reaching and start moving our feet.”

Mandie Miller led Newport with 12 points on four 3-pointers. As a team, the Tigers made six 3s and just one 2-point shot.

“It was pretty weird,” Roye said. “I’ve never really seen anything like it.”
