The Hopkinton girls’ basketball team continued its hot start with its second straight decisive victory to open the season, topping Hillsboro-Deering at home, 56-22.

Senior forward/center Katie Meserve had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards and senior Ellie Owen tied the team-lead in points with 12.

Maddie Follansbee led the defense, but the Hawks had contributions from the entire roster, although it took a while to get things started after a “sluggish” start, according to Hopkinton head coach Pat Roye.

The Hawks exploded in the third quarter with a balanced offense, outscoring the Hillcats 22-1 in the frame to put the game away.

“We got great play off the bench as nine players scored in the game,” Roye said. “We played solid defense in the second half and shared the ball nicely.”

Hopkinton improves to 2-0 thanks to Tuesday’s home victory and a 60-23 rout of Newport in the season-opener on Friday night.

Faith Grimes (nine points) and Zoe Kemp (eight points) led H-D (0-2).

The Hawks will face its stiffest competition of the young season on Friday when Hopkinton travels to Litchfield to take on Campbell (1-1).

Hinsdale 49, Pittsfield 22

For the second night in a row the Pittsfield girls’ basketball team (0-2) showed some defensively prowess, but once again fell victim to a tough opponent in another loss at home to the 2-0 Pacers.

“Hinsdale is a very good team,” Pittsfield head coach Heidi Hall said. “I would consider them top five for sure.”

Despite the lopsided score, the Panthers kept things close early on, trailing just 21-11 at halftime.

“They’re a high-scoring team,” Hall said. “Our goal was to hold them to 40 points.”

Pittsfield was on pace for that goal at halftime, but some hot long-range shooting from the Pacers sealed the game.

Senior guard Haylee Gilleney scored nine points and have five rebounds to lead Pittsfield.

The Panthers hosted Portsmough Christian (0-1) on Friday night in their next outing.
