It has become so common for politicians and governments to be incompetent and fail to do their jobs that it is an extraordinary occasion when a political leader does what they are supposed to do. As such, credit should be given to Gov. Chris Sununu for firing Granite Pathways from running the state’s youth substance abuse treatment center.

This organization failed to properly search one of their patients for drugs. This simple act is one of the most basic procedures in running a drug treatment facility. The individual with the drugs then passed them out to other patients with predictable consequences. This comes after they allowed two girls to escape from the facility. One of them was subsequently sexually assaulted.

It would have been easy to make excuses or cover up the incompetence of this organization. It is what we have come to expect from government. But in moving in a swift and decisive way, state government shows what it can be at its best. Gov. Sununu also sent a strong good government message to all state contractors. The message is now clear: State government will hold you accountable when it hires you to do a job. If you fail to do your job, you will be gone.
