Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire in Northfield that left one man dead over the weekend.
Firefighters were called to a home at 354 Shaker Road early Saturday morning and found a detached garage on fire, the state fire marshal’s office said. After the fire was put out, 56-year-old Kenneth Gorrell of Northfield was found dead in the building, officials said. No one else was injured.
The state medical examiner’s office determined Gorrell’s death was not related to the fire, officials said.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Neither police nor fire officials said whether the death or the fire were considered suspicious.
Fire departments from Belmont, Franklin, New Hampton and Sanbornton assisted the Tilton-Northfield Fire Department to extinguish the blaze. Tilton police remain involved in the investigation, according to the fire marshal. Gorrell was the owner of the home and garage, according to town tax records.
