Hot topic: Officials in Canterbury are hoping to induct a “noise nuisance ordinance.”

Article 16 would make it unlawful for any one to make “any excessive, unnecessarily loud noise or any noise which annoys, disturbs, injures, or endangers the comfort, repose, health, peace or safety of others within the Town of Canterbury.”

For example, playing music in a car that can be heard from 50 feet away, accelerating and braking quickly for extended periods of time or revving the engine.

People in the town would not be able to use fireworks, operate construction vehicles, like a backhoe or bulldozer, use equipment, like power tools, or play music at a volume that can be heard by neighbors from 10 p.m. and 7  a.m. Monday through Saturday and between 10 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday.

The “noise nuisance ordinance” is recommended by the select board.

Budget: The total budget is $2.9 million, up $129,463 from last year.

Contested races: There are no contested races. Each candidate is running unopposed.

When and where: Ballot voting will be on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Canterbury Elementary School. Town meeting will be Friday, March 13, at 7 p.m. at the school.
