Winter is on the wane, and signs of spring are everywhere: Shades of green appearing under our feet and on the distant hillsides; the gift of more light lengthening our days and boosting our energies and intentions. It’s time to open the doors and windows and refresh the air with new ideas, spirited discussions and diverse perspectives.
Entering its 31st year, the lifelong learning program known as LINEC offers a series of low-cost, thought-provoking classes especially geared to seniors each spring, summer, and fall. Look for the golden fliers and posters on community bulletin boards, in stores, banks, libraries, even some restaurants and coffee shops. They are out and about in Concord, Henniker, Hopkinton, Hillsboro, Weare and other central New Hampshire communities to announce the spring term that will begin April 6.
Among this spring’s topics are 20th Century Women Poets; A New History of Life (Paleontology), Staying Grounded in Troubled Times (where the instructor, Betsy Black, promises “fun and laughter guaranteed”); Post War Anti-Communism and the Hollywood Ten, Ancient Civilizations of North America, The History of Christianity, and Denmark and France under Nazi Occupation. You may also want to join an on-going reading group of Classic American novels where E.L. Doctorow’s “Ragtime” is next up for discussion.
Classes are non-credit and purely for pleasure, enjoyment and to enhance knowledge. They are typically held either in Henniker or Hopkinton. Check the LINEC website at linecatnec.org for full descriptions of classes as well as registration and instructor biographical information. Or email linecregister@gmail.com to request a catalog or flier. You can also call 978-743-9007 for information.
