The Monitor has been played. On April 10, the paper published a long “My Turn” column by Chuck Douglas, “Sununu and Trump: A tale of two leaders.”
Douglas is identified only as “a former congressman who lives in Bow.”
The Monitor fails to mention that he was a Republican congressman and was appointed to the New Hampshire Supreme Court by a Republican governor. He was – and is – a longtime establishment Republican.
And while his criticisms of Donald Trump are valid and likely to infuriate the New Hampshire Trumpsters, his depiction of Sununu’s leadership during this pandemic is incomplete.
Specifically, where is there easy access to testing? I will let others complete the picture in that regard.
Instead, I want to question the Monitor’s decision to participate in what is an overt attempt to separate Sununu from Trump. Incumbent Republican Kelly Ayotte failed to do this in her Senate race and lost to Maggie Hassan.
Sununu learned that lesson and now has sent Chuck Douglas out to pry him free. If he had any courage, Sununu would be saying these things himself, instead of sending a proxy. But he is a political coward.
Meanwhile, the Monitor has become the tool of the Sununu re-election campaign. Why didn’t you just sell them a full-page ad. You need the revenue.
