Who would have ever thought that social distancing is an act of respect and kindness. That wearing a mask in the presence of others would be a humble gesture actually breeding emotional closeness. Ironic, but captivating, this has been an effect of the life-threatening novel coronavirus.
Remarkably, we have been more cognizant of our responsibility to others. Imagine the powerful change to community, should this endure, long after our present pandemic.
In contrast, those who congregate on our State House steps to protest the home sheltering policies, standing side by side, wearing no masks and even a few carrying guns, show no regard for each other or us. In the name of freedom, they defy the only effective means we have to combat this virus. They do not understand that by gathering unprotected, they might further delay our liberation from unemployment and economic lock-down.
Our leaders appear in public not wearing masks. Vice President Pence refused to wear a mask at his visit to the Mayo Clinic, claiming he tested negative daily for COVID-19. Leaders should be leading by example.
Letโs hope social distancing marks a limited era that will soon pass, but that our daily expressions of respect and kindness remain.
