A storage unit belonging to the Franklin Girls’ Softball team and a public restroom in Daniel Park were vandalized with graffiti early Sunday.
Franklin Police Chief Goldstein said the graffiti, which featured profanity as well as anti-police and anarchist symbols, was discovered by an officer around 3 a.m. that morning.
The graffiti may be influenced by the national climate, as protestors around the country call for police reform in response to the killing of George Floyd. However, demonstrative activity in Franklin has been low overall, Goldstein said.
“We haven’t really had any overt contact with anybody, quite frankly, for that matter,” he said. “No real demonstrations I’m aware of at all.”
Franklin Girls’ Softball President Danielle Croteau said residents who lived nearby heard activity in the park around midnight. Board members of the softball team have since washed most of the graffiti paint on the storage unit away, she said.
Goldstein said investigation into the vandalism is ongoing. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Franklin Police Department, he said.
“Right now we’re kind of in a holding pattern, as with most vandalism, quite frankly,” he said.
