Two months after a woman reported an assault by men who appeared to be construction workers on Hoit Road, the Concord Police Department is considering suspending its investigation unless new leads surface.
“It’s dead in the water right now until something breaks,” Concord Deputy Chief John Thomas said by phone Tuesday. “We do not have any suspects at this time.”
On the afternoon of June 17, a motorist called police to report that she was driving on Hoit Road after 3 p.m. when she was assaulted by two to three construction workers. She said the individuals were wearing reflective vests and appeared to be performing work in the area.
Thomas said police confirmed that there were in fact construction workers in the area between Hoit Road March and Tallant Road that day.
“We did speak with the folks who were out there and they cooperated fully with the investigation,” Thomas said. “At this time, there is nothing to place those workers with the victim; there is nothing to show they interacted with each other, or that there is some kind of connection with the victim.”
The woman reported to police that she was assaulted inside her vehicle, Thomas said. She did not require emergency medical treatment, according to police records.
On social media, the woman posted about the incident and shared photographs of her injuries, which included a black eye and a swollen cheek. The personal account and attached images generated significant debate, and police said they monitored those comments and directly reached out to individuals who appeared to have information that might advance their case.
“A lot of those folks also contacted us because they saw the social media posts,” Thomas said. “We followed up on many tips, but the case remains open for now and will likely be suspended.”
Thomas said officers do not have enough evidence against anyone to file charges.
