Although a former Republican, in my opinion the Trump administration has been a disaster. It seems to get worse every day, but the alleged comments he recently made about our military dead, calling them “suckers,” were too much.

It was bad enough that he proclaimed that the late Sen. John McCain was not a hero because he was captured by the North Vietnamese. Did President Trump know that McCain’s plane was shot down over Hanoi and how badly he was treated in his captivity?

I shall never forget an experience I had in 2004 while visiting the D-Day beaches in Normandy, France, on the 60th anniversary of that epic battle.

Our tour also included a stop at the nearby American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, where 9,388 American servicemen and servicewomen are buried.

I joined a group of fellow veterans in a formation and saluted during the playing of our national anthem. I found it extremely moving as I looked out over the thousands of white crosses and Stars of David in that beautiful cemetery.

Those buried there made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom. I have to wonder if President Trump had visited that other American military cemetery near Paris would he still have called our fallen heroes “suckers.”
