Rep. Jim Spillane has once again brought embarrassment and disgrace to our town of Deerfield.

What he now claims was a joke – encouragement “to loot and burn” homes with BLM signs – was nothing but a statement of pure, disgusting racism.

Despite the outrage and, for some residents, the fear that his Facebook post provoked, Spillane has not uttered one word of apology. The most frustrating part of all this is that despite this incident and his history of multiple court appearances for various offenses as well as his recent Facebook post of a squirrel he completely macerated with his gun, he will most likely be re-elected.

Why? In 2018, Spillane placed only fourth for state representative in his re-election bid in Deerfield because people know him very well here and the majority do not vote for him; however, he wins easily in the other Republican towns that have been gerrymandered to be part of our Rockingham District 2.

If Deerfield was its own district, which it was in the past and still meets the criteria to be so, individuals like Jim Spillane would never be elected to represent us.

Until our governor stops vetoing legislation to form a nonpartisan redistricting commission, I guess it would take Rep. Spillane ending up in prison, like our former Rep. Kyle Tasker, before he could be replaced.
