Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito have suggested that the Supreme Court re-examine the court’s 2015 decision that legalized same-sex marriage. Their preposterous claim is that the freedom of gay men and women, and, I guess, non-binary couples, to marry limits religious freedom. I do not see how my ability to worship, or not, a supposedly loving God is limited by the fact of my gay neighbor’s and friend’s marriage. The justices complain that the 2015 decision labels opponents of same-sex marriage as bigots. To that, I say: If the shoe fits . . .

With the addition to the U.S. Supreme Court of yet another justice from the far right through the unbelievably corrupt machinations of Mitch McConnell and his Republican team, Justices Thomas and Alito may well gain essentially unopposed power to cast our country back into the morass that was the American undercurrent during the last two centuries – and seems to continue into this one. A time before everybody had a right to vote, before a woman was able to safely chose her own fate, before people in love could choose to marry whom they would.

I thought we were past all that oppression. Not if Thomas and Alito have their way.
