With the impending approval and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, one might assume that the end of this pandemic is near. Not so fast. As reported in the Concord Monitor on Dec. 9, data from a recent poll show that only about half of Americans are planning to receive the vaccine once it is approved in the United States. Thatโs not good enough.
Vaccinations are one of the most important breakthroughs in the history of science and medicine. While many cite skepticism of the FDAโs issuance of Emergency Use Authorizations, it is important to note that the data-driven science behind this vaccine has been developing for decades. It is not as if researchers are starting from square one, just like they donโt start from square one each flu season. And besides, what choice do we have? The reality is that the pandemic is worse than ever before, and people are becoming less compliant with social distancing recommendations. In other words, this vaccine is our only way out.
So much of this year has been about protecting not only yourself, but the people around you as well. Wearing masks and social distancing are far more effective when paired with cooperation and a consideration for the greater community. Bearing in mind weโre coming off the deadliest week since the outset of the pandemic, it is now more important than ever that we think about keeping the public safe. This means making considerate and responsible decisions and getting vaccinated.
