Ian Barwise, 29, began keeping a near-daily journal in July, jotting down his thoughts about each of the books he read: Texas Ranger and Texas Outlaw by James Patterson; The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells; A Biblical Economics Manifesto, and more.

Barwise had a lot of time over the summer to read books, complete word searches, solve sudoku puzzles and do pushups because he was incarcerated at York County Jail. He was arrested in July for allegedly violating the terms of his probation, and he’s always kept a journal when he’s in jail, he said, because it helps keep him feeling human.
