Instead of a solution to the decades long structural failure to fund our public schools, State Reps. David Luneau, Dick Ames, and Marjorie Porter propose a cruel band-aid. Here’s how their House Bill 504 works: Those citizens struggling to pay the oppressive property taxes on their homes, while twisting their ragged hat in their hands, must swear to the powers that they don’t have the means to pay the tax. Maybe, if the powers are satisfied, after examination of the personal affairs of the poor taxpayer, the homeowner will get a token tax break.
Where’s the legislative and executive spine to fix our awful tax system and fairly fund our public schools? It certainly is not Luneau, Ames, and Porter.
