The storied history of the New Hampshire presidential primary reflects the important role that our state has played in our national political life over many decades. Unfortunately, some of our fellow citizens are currently engaged in a campaign based in outright falsehoods, claiming that the future status of the presidential primary is somehow threatened as a result of support for national legislation that protects our democracy. Recent TV and digital ads here in New Hampshire have attacked both U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen for their support of the For the People Act (S.1), sensible legislation that protects voting rights and makes sure that our democracy works for everyone.
The suggestion that the enactment of the needed reforms in S.1 will cause the New Hampshire presidential primary to cease to exist is a deliberate and shameful effort to cause confusion, and those peddling this nonsense know better. There is no connection between the two. Sen. Hassan and Sen. Shaheen are to be applauded for their leadership in working to ensure that our precious democracy indeed works for all of our citizens.
