We’re at a time when most people just don’t want to work. We’re just getting out of a pandemic and everyone is anxious to get out and return some normalcy to their lives. Unfortunately it’s not like you can just flick the switch back on again for restaurants reopening their doors to bigger crowds and staff shortages. There are reports on customers being belligerent and staff being afraid.

On a recent trip to York Beach, five friends went to a popular restaurant where we were told there was a 40 minute wait. After over an hour and a half and inquiries about seating it was clear that the restaurant was frazzled. We could not even sit at an unoccupied table and had to stand with our drinks instead for all this time. We finally decided to sit down and then something amazing happened. A waitress appeared and asked to take our order. Since we had not been given these assigned seats we questioned whether or not it was okay. She replied “you are here and I am here, why not” and gave us the absolute best service with a smile on her face despite the crazy circumstances.

In addition to a tip on my credit card I left her a $10 bill. Wouldn’t it be neat if we could create a movement to let our servers know how much we care that they are there for us. Let’s let them know by adding a ten dollar bill when paying your tab!
