Last Jan. 6th we entered a universe where “might is right” and “the end justifies the means.” Suddenly, unimaginably we were a hair’s breadth away from tyranny. Thankfully, the rule of law prevailed against mob violence. What example does this set for our children? In elementary school we’re taught to cooperate, compromise and show good citizenship. In games we learn to play fair, by the rules and show good sportsmanship. Even Melania Trump entered the national stage, ironically, with her campaign to end bullying. In all walks of life we are encouraged to listen and show compassion, “to be the change we wish to see.”

A year ago, a Christian charity clashed brutally with images of armed militants in patriotic zeal standing by to genuflect and defecate. Though the right argues that the election was stolen, more than 60 court cases invalidated the legality and legitimacy of such claims. Work continues to silence our voices and sabotage fair elections.

The Freedom To Vote Act protects voting rights, stops partisan gerrymandering and limits the influence of dark money in politics so that billionaires can’t buy elections. The John Lewis Voting Rights Act restores and strengthens our voting freedoms by ensuring that any discriminatory changes to voting rights based on race or background are federally reviewed in order to protect access to the ballot. It’s hugely encouraging to see signs in local towns promoting the passage of these outstanding bills. With your support for them both, democracy will prevail.
