Adam Boivin was charged with eight counts of child sexual abuse images (Monitor, 2/23). He was found in possession of multiple sexual images of children/girls ages 5-13. As a result, these young girls are suffering from a multitude of various dynamics. Initially, they are anxious, fearful, angry, experiencing low self esteem, confusion and lack confidence. Over time they will be unable to trust and come to view themselves as damaged goods. Because of their young ages, the section of the brain that registers emotions and memories is continuing to develop. The amygdala and hippocampus are forming cellular level connections that will impact the child forever.
Child sexual assault causes significant emotional and psychological damage. It will require significant psychological therapy and yet the futures of these children will always be negatively impacted. Boivin has given them a life sentence of trauma that may include difficulty developing relationships, a heightened startle reflex, hyper vigilance and anxiety. Once again a dangerous sexual offender is released by the court. An offender who has an ongoing compulsion to re-offend. Sexual offenders should never receive bail. I do appreciate the multiple law enforcement agencies for the arrest of Boivin and applaud them for all they do. They have a horrendous job. But until judges and courts understand the absolute devastation caused by sexual offenders, offenders will continue to sexually assault with impunity, as evidenced by New Hampshireโs dismal 3% conviction rate for sexual offenders.
