For as long as highways, road networks and airport runways are needed, asphalt will be pavement of choice. Concrete carries a far-too damning penalty with its enormous carbon dioxide release by conversion of limestone to cement.

Asphalt is abundant as by-product of oil refining, and it occurs naturally in only a few places (Venezuela, Canada). Asphalt paving will be with us for years to come.
