I just read David Brooks’ Granite Geek article “Heat pumps don’t seem to be like they’d work here, but they’re in the future of home heating” (Monitor, 2/21). It really caught my eye. I couldn’t help but be impressed with my friend Pat Martin and the others interviewed who are saving money and contributing to reducing fossil fuel use by installing heat pumps. That’s a critical step in tackling climate change which is causing wild swings and extremes in weather events, drought, wildfires, impacting all of us, especially the poor and the most vulnerable.
I can’t put in heat pumps right now (though I’d love to!) but what I can do is support the efforts of Citizens Climate Lobby’s initiatives to put a price on fossil fuel pollution. I’m supporting HR 2307 the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act which aims to put a price on carbon emissions while also providing dividends to American citizens. My “to do” list for tomorrow includes asking my NH representatives, Congresswoman Anne Kuster and Senator Jeanne Shaheen, to support HR 2307. For info about heat pumps, well, I’ll know who to call someday soon: “Hello Pat. Do you have a minute?”
